The Montreal Canadiens will begin the process of hiring their new general manager next week, according to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie.

In an article on Wednesday, Lavoie mentioned that at least eight candidates will be interviewed for the position next week including team legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Patrick Roy. Former Canadiens forward Daniel Briere is also expected to be in the mix.

"There is a very wide variety of candidates, including Patrick Roy, Daniel Brière (Flyers), Mathieu Darche (Lightning), Marc Denis, Kent Hughes, Stéphane Quintal, Danièle Sauvageau and Émilie Castonguay. It's also possible that a name or two will be added to the list by the end of next week," Lavoie said.

Lavoie also added that because of the rise in COVID-19 cases, all interviews are likely to take place virtually.

The Canadiens' selection committee of Geoff Molson, Jeff Gorton, Michael Andlauer and Bob Gainey are still in the process of submitting requests to speak to people under contract with other teams (Briere and Darche). The entire process to receive the okay from a team and interview the potential candidate could be a couple of weeks, so it's possible that the Canadiens don't name their new general manager until around All-Star Weekend (February 4th-5th).
