With COVID-19 causing roster chaos in around the NHL including with the Montreal Canadiens organzation, their AHL affiliate in Laval has signed forward Devante Smith-Pelly to a professional tryout contract.

It won't be the 29-year-old's first time in the Canadiens organization. He spent parts of two seasons with Montreal, playing in 66 games where he had fifteen points (seven goals, eight assists), thirty-four penalty minutes, and was a minus-four.

Most recently, the Scarborough native played in the American Hockey League with the Ontario Reign, the Los Angeles Kings' affiliate, during the 2020-21 season. In fourteen games with the Reign, Smith-Pelly only recorded one assist along with four penalty minutes, and was a minus-three.

If all goes well, Smith-Pelly could suit up for Laval's next game, which is set for tomorrow night against the Syracuse Crunch, a team he played four games for back in the 2011-12 season.
