Early last week, the Czech Ice Hockey Association announced that going forward in IIHF events they would like to be called "Czechia" rather than the "Czech Republic". They also added that their uniforms will say "Cesko" on them, which translates to "Czechia" in English.

"We would like to inform you that, based on the decision by the Executive Committee of the Czech Ice Hockey Association, as of November 2021 our National Teams will use the one-word name "Cesko" on their jerseys instead of the Czech Republic, as is currently used. This change concerns all men's, women's, youth and para ice hockey teams except for the Olympic and Paralympic tournaments," the Czech Ice Hockey Association said.

Czechia will play their first game of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship on Sunday night against the hosts Canada, but despite their governing body announcing a name change, including on the uniforms, it appears that it won't happen for this tournament.

On their Twitter account, the Czechs posted a picture of their locker room, which was all set up for their clash with Canada. On their jerseys, it says "Czech Republic" rather than "Cesko" which has confused many fans.

Hockey writer Jiri Vitek then asked the Czech Twitter account about the jerseys and why they don't say "Cesko", and they responded with:

"Hello, Jiri, the name change on the jerseys has not yet taken place for this tournament, but we are already sticking to the new name in all other materials. "Cesko" will be on the Nike jerseys at the World Championships in Finland."

Czechia will play Canada tonight, as mentioned above and will also face Germany (Dec. 27th), Finland (Dec. 29th), and Austria (Dec. 30th).
