COVID-19 has caused over fifty games to be postponed within the last week or so In order to stop games from being postponed, the NHL and NHLPA need to come up with roster protection when it comes to COVID-19, and according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, that is currently in the works.

"NHL/NHLPA working on COVID roster protection, including: Optional use of taxi-squad through All-Star; emergency call-ups as long as player is making no more than $1M; and freedom to add a goalie if a club has less than 2 healthy due to the virus," Friedman said in a tweet on Sunday.

He added, "There are some rules on who is eligible for a taxi squad, including clearing of waivers and time spent on an NHL roster."

Teams that have been cleared by the league to return to practice will do so this afternoon. The NHL had intended on having games return tomorrow, but they pushed it back to Tuesday night.

The NHL is expected to update the status of Tuesday's games/return at some point on Sunday evening. At last count, on December 21st, there were a total of 135 players and 56 staff members in the league's protocol. That number has likely jumped between now and then.
