A very tough break for free agent Bobby Ryan. After travelling to Switzerland to play in the Spengler Cup with Bern Select, it was discovered early Christmas Day that the tournament had been cancelled after 17 players with HC Davos, the host team, had tested positive for COVID-19. Ryan is now attempting to find the earliest flight back home.

"Wasn't meant to be," said Ryan on Twitter. "Merry Christmas from Davos. Really gutted I am missing Christmas morning at home for nothing. But thankful I got to see Switzerland for a week. Fingers crossed for negative test and a quick flight back!"

Team Canada and two others had withdrawn from the world's oldest hockey tournament about a week ago amid rising cases of COVID-19 around the world. Spengler Cup organizers had scrambled to find other teams willing to take part, and announced the tournament would be going ahead. However, with so many members of the host team entering quarantine, that was no longer a possibility.

Ryan last played in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings. He was given a professional tryout for training camp but failed to make the team. He has never officially announced his retirement and it appears he is still holding out hope for a new contract.
