Stan Smyl, who spent his entire 15 year playing career with the Vancouver Canucks, has been given a big promotion within the organization. Smyl has been serving as an advisor with the team since 2004, but was rewarded for his work Thursday by getting a new position from President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford. Rutherford, who's been on the job for just a little over a week, has decided to make Smyl his Vice-President in the Hockey Operations Department.

"Stan has been a foundational piece of this team for decades, and we are pleased that he will be taking on this role," said Rutherford.

Smyl, 62, will work closely with Rutherford on all hockey operations matters, including player personnel decisions and internal operations.

Meanwhile, Rutherford also announced that fellow Canucks legends Daniel and Henrik Sedin are remaining on as Special Advisors to the General Manager, and Ryan Johnson will continue as Senior Director, Player Development and General Manager for the Abbotsford Canucks.

Rutherford is currently serving as the interim GM until a permanent one is found. He's been putting a big mark on Vancouver in his short time there, essentially clearing out the main front office positions and putting people he's hired in their places.

Smyl started playing for the Canuck in 1978, staying with the team until his retirement in 1991. Besides his roles with Vancouver's management, he was also head coach of the AHL's Manitoba Moose and Syracuse Crunch.
