As the Olympics approach faster and faster with every passing day, the International Olympic Committee released some new information that could be problematic for NHL players being allowed to participate in the games.

Of course, the new information is regarding COVID-19 protocols. According to TSN's Chris Johnston, any confirmed positives at the event must produce two negative tests 24 hours apart. If this requirement is not met, the quarantine period can last anywhere from 21 days up to five weeks, which is in accordance with Chinese law.

NHL players are not required to be paid by their teams if they miss time on the other side of the Olympics, so this could cause problems for players wanting to participate. There will be a call between the IOC, IIHF, NHL, and NHLPA medical personnel to go over these protocols.

If that lengthy quarantine requirement remains, players will have to weigh heavily on their decisions to participate in the games. Players will have until January 10 to withdraw without being dealt with a financial penalty.

The NHL had a board meeting yesterday, and they wanted to make sure that it is noted that the Olympic decision will be in the hands of the players. The league and NHLPA seem to be on the same page, so there will be no battling of opinions as of right now.

Everyone wants to see NHL players fight for their respective countries' national glory at the Olympics, but this development could throw a wrench in things. Hopefully the league and players can find a way to fight through this in order to allow the best players in the world to participate.
