Amid speculation that the league was reconsidering its plan to allow players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the decision is not entirely in the hands of player.

"In good faith, we made a promise to the players, and ultimately this is going to have to be a players' decision," Bettman said following a two-day NHL Board of Governors meeting.

It won't be an easy decision for many. Players, of course, want to represent their countries on the world's largest stage. However, travelling to China will mean limited movement while they are there, daily testing, and an increased risk of contracting COVID-19. Getting COVID could mean lengthy quarantines in a foreign country away from their NHL teams and families.

Meanwhile, Bettman was asked about the possibility of another World Cup of Hockey, an international tournament staged by the NHL. He told reporters the league remains interested in doing that "when we can come up for air."
