Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins has accumulated quite the suspension history throughout his career. His latest, a three game ban for a slew-foot on Vancouver's Oliver Ekman-Larsson, was his first since January of 2018, but it appears his past history played a big role in the number of games anyway.

According to Sportsnet's stats, Marchand has now been suspended seven times in his NHL career, which started in 2009. He's missed a total of 22 games due to punishments from Player Safety, latest suspension included, and has forfeited $971,397.61 in salary.

Meanwhile, there is usually a statute of limitations when it comes to being considered a "repeat offender" in the NHL. After 18 months from your last suspension, you no longer have repeat offender status. That said, it appears DoPS made an exception in Marchand's case for the latest suspension.

According to ESPN, Marchand has been "warned through the years by the department about slew-footing opponents. He was fined for slew-footing Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Matt Niskanen in 2011. In 2015, he was suspended for a slew foot on New York Rangers center Derrick Brassard on a play that was strikingly similar to the one involving Ekman-Larsson."

Marchand has also been suspended and fined for "clipping", the act of throwing the body across or below the knees of an opponent from any direction. All of this established a pattern of dangerous tripping plays by Marchand and led to the three-game suspension this time, according to the Department of Player Safety.
