Initial reports had suggested that after losing Slater Koekkoek to injury on Thursday night versus the Winnipeg Jets, the Edmonton Oilers had called up arguably their number one prospect in Philip Broberg. However, a subsequent report has confirmed that the Broberg call-up is, in fact, due to an injury to Darnell Nurse.

Broberg, 20, was taken with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The Swedish defenceman is currently in his first season in North America, and has been great with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League early on with 10 assists in just 13 games.

While losing Nurse to injury (week-to-week) is certainly going to sting, Broberg's call-up is exciting news for Oilers fans who were beginning to become a little bit disappointed with the Swedish blueliner given that Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras, who is a clear star in the making, was taken just one pick behind him.

This should give Broberg the opportunity to prove to Oilers fans just how much potential he has. He may have a chance to suit up for his first ever NHL game on Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
