With the Toronto Maple Leafs having taken care of priority number one, inking pending UFA Morgan Rielly to an 8-year, $60M deal last week, it seems logical that the next area of focus for Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would be pending UFA Jack Campbell.

On Tuesday, Real Kyper at Noon's Nick Kypreos had reported that the Leafs have begun preliminary talks with Campbell and his representatives on trying to find a contract extension.

Kypreos made the initial announcement on Twitter, but spoke in detail on the subject with Justin Bourne on Sportsnet's SN590 The Fan during an appearance on the show on Tuesday afternoon.

As far as what the framework of a new deal might look like, Justin Bourne had suggested that the Leafs may table an offer equal to that of Campbell's current counterpart, Petr Mrazek - who signed a 3-year deal with the Leafs during this summer, which carries a $3.8M AAV.

Kyper quickly shut down that train of thought, offering his opinion that Campbell will command every penny of what Cal Petersen and Elvis Merzlikins will earn on their new deals with Los Angeles and Columbus, respectively.

Petersen signed a 3-year, $15M extension with the Kings on September 22nd and will earn $5M per season, while Merzlikins signed a 5-year, $27M deal with the Blue Jackets one day earlier, on September 21st, which will pay him $5.4M per season through 2026-27.
