In light of the TSN interview with sexual assault victim Kyle Beach Wednesday night, the NHL has reportedly reached out to teams, giving them what's being referred to as a "culture" memo.

"In addition to planned meetings with Joel Quenneville and Kevin Cheveldayoff, the NHL sent out a "culture" memo to the Clubs yesterday reminding what's acceptable..what's not, and highlighted the resources rolled out to support teams and Personnel dealing with bad situations," said TSN's Darren Dreger.

Dreger did not get into specifics of exactly what the memo to teams entailed. I understand the league is attempting to do its job here, but something about this doesn't sit right. I certainly hope a memo isn't required to remind teams that sexual assault, and attempting to cover up sexual assault, isn't acceptable. No one should need to be informed of that. It also sounds like the NHL is just as focused on its image at a time when the focus should be on making sure something like this doesn't happen again.

Bottom line, the fallout from Wednesday night's interview with Beach (you can read more details on that here) will continue for some time. There was a different feel when watching games Wednesday night. In between periods, almost every broadcast covered Beach's story, with numerous mentions of how important it was that it not get swept under the rug again. The NHL can only hope that this is the only incident involving such serious topics to get uncovered, but I have a feeling that likely won't be the case. Beach's courage will surely inspire others to come forward. In the meantime, the league and its teams are facing extra scrutiny right now, and deservedly so.
