According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Florida Panthers are currently working on a contract extension for captain Aleksander Barkov, with the hope of having it done by opening night of the 2021-22 season.

"The Florida Panthers are engaged in ongoing negotiations on a contract extension with captain Aleksander Barkov. Per sources, talks are progressing slowly, but there is optimism a deal can be reached by the start of the reg-season (which is not currently considered a deadline)," Pagnotta said in a tweet on Friday afternoon.

Barkov, 26, has emerged as one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL over the past few seasons. Following the completion of the 2020-21 season, Barkov was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy which is given annually to the best defensive forward.

The Tempere, Finland native is entering the final year of a six-year contract he signed in 2016, one that sees him make $5.9 million AAV. Given his development since he signed that contract, the AAV on his new deal will likely be in the range of $9-10 million for seven or eight years.
