After admitting that he flat-out didn't like New York Rangers star and fellow Russian Artemi Panarin, and even accusing him of assaulting a girl in 2011 while both were with the Vityaz organization, Andrei Nazarov appears to be attempting to pull back his words somewhat. Nazarov, a former NHL agitator, was named the new head coach of HC Sochi in the KHL this week. During an interview regarding his new position, Nazarov was asked about his relationship with Panarin.

"Artemi Panarin is a world-class player," said Nazarov. "Undoubtedly, he has achieved great heights, and I helped him in that. If we have a misunderstanding, we'll deal with it ourselves and talk about it. What was in the past is in the past."

"If the club director says we have money for Panarin, and in case of an NHL lockout he can come to the KHL, I will tell him to take Artemi," he continued. "He's the greatest player. What questions could there be?"

While this does seem like Nazarov is attempting to tone down his criticism of Panarin, it's doubtful Panarin feels the same way. Nazarov made a very serious allegation against Panarin, one that was not corroborated in any way. In fact, several current and former players came out to say it didn't happen the way Nazarov said, including at least two former teammates who were there. Panarin ended up taking time off from the NHL as he was worried about his family back in Russia amidst the clearly groundless accusation.

Nazarov's initial dislike of Panarin appears to stem from Panarin's criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nazarov is a passionate supporter of Putin and spoke out several times on Panarin's disapproval of him.
