Former Winnipeg Jets defenseman Sami Niku is hoping to get his NHL career back on track with a fresh start in Montreal. The Finland native signed a one-way contract with the Winnipeg Jets, but later walked away and signed a two-way contract with the Canadiens.

«I really need a fresh start and that's why I made the decision to terminate the contract and look for a new club,» said Niku, who is leaving some money on the table.

«I didn't care about the money; I just want to play hockey,» said Niku.

Niku was also interested in coming to Montreal because of having previous chemistry with Habs D-man Ben Chiarot, who also played in Winnipeg at the same time as him.

«He was my partner for a few games when he was called up to the Jets,» said Chiarot.

«Back then, he was a young up-and-coming prospect with a lot of offensive upside. He was really calm with the puck on the blue line. He likes to shake the defender and make some moves, and he's good moving the puck out of his end. Things went a little sideways for him, he had some injuries, and now here he is with us.»

As a late arrival to camp, Niku has not played in a preseason game yet, as he was just signed last Friday. He will likely get his chance when the Canadiens play the Senators this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
