After close to 500 regular season games in the NHL, defenceman Sami Vatanen is moving on, at least for the upcoming season. Vatanen has signed a one-year deal with Genève-Servette HC of the National League in Switzerland.

Vatanen spent several seasons with the Anaheim Ducks after being drafted by the team in the fourth round in 2009. He went to the New Jersey Devils in the trade that involved Adam Henrique in 2017. After close to three seasons in New Jersey, he was dealt to Carolina at the trade deadline in 2020. Due to injury, he would miss playing in the regular season with the Hurricanes, but suited up for seven post-season games. He returned to the Devils on a one-year deal the following season, but was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Stars in April of this year.

There was plenty of speculation that Vatanen would at least receive a professional tryout (PTO) from an NHL team for training camp. However, that didn't happen. The 30-year-old has some time left in his career to make it back to the NHL, if that's what he wants. Whether that happens will depend on his showing with Genève-Servette this season.
