Andrei Deniskin, widely considered a star player in the Ukrainian Hockey League (UHL), has found himself the subject of much criticism after making an extremely racist gesture at an opponent. Deniskin was caught on camera pretending to peel and eat a banana after mixing it up with black combatant Jalen Smereck.

Deniskin offered an apology, sort of, after the game had ended. Many have criticized it for sounding insincere.

"During the match, I, being of negative emotions, displayed a gesture that could be considered as an insult [relating to] race," Deniskin said.

"I respect all people regardless of their race or nationality. Emotions in hockey, unfortunately, are different."

The league issued a statement saying Deniskin would be punished.

"Such behavior of hockey players on the ice is unacceptable within the framework of a civilized society."

"It should be noted that disciplinary proceedings will be opened against [Deniskin].

Smerek, who was born in Detroit, spent several years in the Arizona Coyotes system, although he was never drafted. He played several seasons with the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL.
