Though it is not exactly official at this point, Curtis McElhinney appears to have announced his retirement from the NHL over his personal Instagram account.

McElhinney, 38, changed his Instagram bio on Friday night to 'Retired Pro Athlete', which several fans noticed shortly after. After being a part of the back to back Stanley Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning rosters, he became a free agent but didn't receive much, if any, interest on the open market. It isn't an overly big surprise given his age mixed with the fact he struggled in the 2020-21 season with a 3.09 goals against average (GAA) along with a .875 save percentage (SV%).

If it is the end we have seen from McElhinney, it was quite the career from a guy who wasn't drafted until the sixth-round (176 overall) by the Calgary Flames in 2002. He played in 13 NHL seasons which included stints with the Flames, Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Carolina Hurricanes. In 249 career games, he recorded a 2.83 GAA along with a .907 SV% and a 94-95-20 record.
