When the Seattle Kraken claimed Mark Giordano from the Calgary Flames, everyone agreed the pick made a ton of sense as the 37-year-old is still a very good player.

However, a high skill level isn't the only thing Giordano brings to the table. As a member of the Flames, he spent eight years as their captain from 2013-2021. He was and still is highly regarded for his time in Calgary as an exceptional leader, which is something the Kraken are counting on him for this upcoming season. To no surprise, he is reportedly already showing that leadership just days into training camp.

«Just awesome to see him out there skating that hard, man,» said Kraken president and CEO Tod Leiweke. «I'm going to go work hard at my desk now.»

The Kraken are one of several teams who are currently without a captain, though that may not be the case for long. Though head coach Dave Hakstol said a decision regarding the team's captaincy has not yet been made, many expect that Giordano, who has played 949 games in his fantastic NHL career, will get the honor sooner than later. While he certainly understands he hasn't earned anything just yet, he let it be known that he would relish the potential opportunity.

«Obviously in Calgary [the captaincy] was a huge, huge deal for me, my family,» Giordano said. «When an organization puts that trust in you, I think it means a lot. I don't care what guys say about it not meaning a lot. It should mean a lot

«But there's a lot of different things going into it. We're a brand-new team, there's a lot of new faces, and I think as far as the coaches and management, they need to get to know us as players and as people before Those are big decisions. For me, it's not going to change anything either way. With a letter on my jersey or not, I'm going to try and help as much as I can on the ice and off the ice especially with our team.»

Though many were disappointed with the selections the Kraken management made in the expansion draft this summer, they may not be as bad as people think. They have some great pieces, such as Giordano, and are in a weak Pacific Division. They could surprise a lot of people this season.
