The New York Islanders have announced another offseason move - this time, a professional try-out for defenseman Erik Gustafsson.

The Islanders have operated fairly covertly this offseason, concealing the details of the deals they signed earlier this summer from the league until September, presumably to prevent NHL GM's from being able to determine what their cap situation looks like, as Lou Lamoriello continues to tinker.

In Gustafsson, the Isles are bringing in a power play specialist who offers little in the way of 5v5 production and not much in the way of actual defensive impact. Still, with a PTO, the move is very low-risk.

Gustafsson spent last season as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, albeit in a 7th/8th defenseman capacity, finding his way into just 5 regular season games, notching just 2 assists, though he did see plenty of action in the postseason, suiting up in 16 playoff games for the Habs and chipping in offensively with 1 goal and 2 assists during their run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
