The Carolina Hurricanes will be without the services of 31-year-old defenceman Jake Gardiner for the 2021-22 season due to upcoming back and hip surgeries he will be undergoing.

"We won't be in a (tight) cap situation," Carolina general manager Don Waddell said. "Gardiner, who's going to have back and hip surgery here, is not going to be ready to go this year. So we had cap space available knowing that he'll go on (LTIR)."

The Minnetonka, Minnesota native only played in 26 regular season games and one playoff game for the Hurricanes during the 2020-21 season due to the previously mentioned injuries. In those 26 regular season games, Gardiner had eight assists, eleven penalty minutes, and was a -1.

Gardiner is under contract for the next two seasons and has a cap hit of $4.05 million.
