NHL games between European clubs have been occurring sporadically for decades, dating back to 1975 when CSKA Moscow faced off against the New York Rangers. Russian Super League/KHL teams have played several games against NHL teams in both North America and overseas, with the most recent games happening in 2010 when SKA Saint Petersburg played Carolina and Dinamo Riga played against Phoenix.

It appears that games between the two leagues could be on the agenda in the not-so-distant future. In an interview on Wednesday, KHL president Alexei Morozov says that he has held discussions with the NHL regarding possible games, and will speak with Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly in mid-October.

"We are in correspondence with the NHL's deputy commissioner Bill Daly. Right now both leagues are preparing for the start of their seasons, and they still have questions about the Olympics. But the reaction is positive and in mid-October we're planning to discuss this further," Morozov said.

One option I would like to see is the Stanley Cup champion face-off against the Gagarin Cup champion in an exhibition game, just before the start of the NHL season, likely in mid-September. To help grow the sport of hockey, the game could be held in a neutral site that both leagues have interest in tapping into, such as Japan, South Korea, etc.
