The Carolina Hurricanes and defenceman Dougie Hamilton have agreed to stop with contract negotiations until the end of the 2020-21 season.

Hamilton, 27, is in the final year of a six-year, $34.5 million deal and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

«We've both decided that it would be best for both sides to just wait until the end of the year,» Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said on the DFO Rundown podcast. «Let's sit down and see if we can hammer out a deal, put it on the back burner so Dougie can worry about playing hockey at this point."

«We've talked to him. He wants to stay here. We want to keep Dougie. We love Dougie. He fits in well with our team, coaches like him.»

Hamilton is in his third season with the Hurricanes after being acquired in an offseason trade from the Calgary Flames. Prior to playing with the Flames, he also spent time with the Boston Bruins. He has 24 points in 30 games this year and has established himself as a true number one defenceman in the NHL.
