Capitals sign Trevor van Riemsdyk to multi-year extension

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Washington Capitals have signed defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year contract extension worth $1.9 million. The deal will see van Riemsdyk earn $900,000 in the first year, and $1 million in the second year.

Van Riemsdyk, 29, signed a one-year contract worth $800,000 with the Capitals in the off-season. In 9 games this season, he has 1 point (1 G), 0 penalty minutes, and is a -3.

The Middletown, New Jersey native went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks following three seasons at the University of New Hampshire. He's spent parts of seven seasons in the NHL with Chicago, Carolina, and Washington.

In 373 regular season games, van Riemsdyk tallied 70 points (16 G, 54 A), 102 penalty minutes, and is a +7. In 26 career playoff games, he has 2 points (1 G, 1 A), 8 penalty minutes, and is a -7. The 29-year-old won the Stanley Cup during his rookie season (2014-15) with the Chicago Blackhawks.
