Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has not shied away from the lofty expectations set on the team before the season, as he believes Montreal must make the playoffs.
«We have to make the playoffs,» Bergevin said in a recent conference call. «I feel we have a team to make the playoffs and once we get in, I feel that anything is possible.»
The Canadiens have finally broken through over the past two seasons, and after staying busy this past offseason, the team looked primed to make another playoff push. Josh Anderson, Tyler Toffoli, Joel Edmundson, and Jake Allen are all making immediate impacts after being brought in during the NHL's shortened offseason.
As of right now, the Habs currently sit fourth in the North Division with a 13-8-7 record which would be good for a playoff position as of right now. The team possesses an astounding 14 draft selections in the upcoming NHL Draft, but Bergevin does not seem to want to use them to bring in any new faces.
«I like the players we have,» said Bergevin. «They're all useful players. For me to give up a pick, take on a player we do like and get another asset, you're going sideways. We don't have any dead money on our roster that we'd like to move.»
Time will tell if the Canadiens can stay in a playoff spot or make a jump in the standings, but it seems that they are in a relatively good position to do so.
