Some big news out of Raleigh on Saturday morning, as the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they have placed veteran defenceman Jake Gardiner on waivers.

As Canes reporter Michael Smith mentioned, the move is being made with the intention of assigning Gardiner to the taxi squad, which gives them cap flexibility while the 30-year-old continues to deal with a back injury that has lingered throughout the 2020-21 season.

This is Gardiner's second season with the Canes after having spent the previous eight with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 17 games this season, he has posted seven assists while averaging just 15:48 in ice time. He is currently in just the second year of a four-year, $16.2 million contract that has a cap hit of $4.05 million, so it would come as a big time shock if a team were to put a claim in for him.
