According to European hockey reporter Aivis Kalnins, Latvian authorities have said there was never a report filed on the alleged Artemi Panarin assault, nor has there ever been a court case, as was claimed by his former coach Andrei Nazarov.

The more that comes out on this story, the more and more it appears to be 100 per cent fabricated. If you have not heard, earlier this week former NHLer and KHL coach Andrei Nazarov, who is a vocal Vladimir Putin supporter, claimed that when Panarin played for him he had a physical altercation with an 18-year-old girl that included him punching her multiple times. This story seemed fishy to many at the time given the fact Panarin has been quite vocal in his dislike for Putin.

Shortly after this story came out, many of Panarin's teammates at the time were quick to say this story was completely made up, and that the New York Rangers forward had never done anything wrong. This is all very unfortunate for Panarin, who has stepped away from the Rangers for the time being. The 29-year-old had 18 points in 14 contests prior to leaving the team, and the hope is that this is all soon brushed aside and he can get back to playing.

Meanwhile, ESPN reached out to the KHL, the league Panarin was playing in when the alleged assault is purported to have taken place. The league said it is "not been aware of or received a complaint in relation to any incident involving Artemi Panarin in December 2011." The league also said that if it had received any complaint, it would have investigated, "as we take any allegations of misconduct incredibly seriously."
