It's not often you'll see a linesman carry out a faceoff in the NHL with absolutely no players present, but that's exactly what happened during the Buffalo Sabres-New Jersey Devils game Tuesday night. In another rarity, Buffalo had played a good game and was up 3-1 on the Devils late in the third. New Jersey had pulled its goalie, but Buffalo's Cody Eakin managed to get an empty netter with seemingly no time left on the clock. The officials decided to review it to see if the goal should count. It did, as there was 0.2 seconds left on the clock when the puck crossed the line, meaning there was still time left in the game. The players apparently didn't care as both teams had already left for the dressing room. In the interest of making things official, the linesman skated to centre ice, the clock started and he dropped the puck to end the game.
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, even if no one gives a rat's ass that you're doing it.
