Oh, the irony. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Pittsburgh Penguins are negotiating a contract with Ron Hextall to become the next GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hextall, of course, is the former goaltender and general manager of the Pens longtime rival, the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Penguins have been looking for a new general manager since the sudden resignation of Jim Rutherford in late January. There have been several reports that Rutherford was working on a trade that the ownership didn't like and he was ordered to halt negotiations. Rutherford has never given a specific reason other than to say it was time.

Upon his retirement from playing in 1999, Hextall immediately joined the Philadelphia Flyers' staff as a professional scout. He was promoted to director of professional player personnel three years later. In June of 2006, Hextall moved to the Los Angeles Kings to take on the role of vice president and assistant general manager. In addition, Hextall served as the general manager of the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL, the Kings' primary minor league affiliate, In 2013, Hextall returned to the Flyers and was named assistant general manager and director of hockey operations. He was named general manager of the Flyers in 2014, following the promotion of Paul Holmgren to team president. On November 26, 2018, the Flyers fired Hextall as general manager. He is currently an advisor in the Hockey Operations department for the Kings.
