Freak accidents are known to occur in hockey from time to time, and it's quite unfortunate to wind up on the receiving end of one, but that's exactly what happened to Vancouver Canucks forward Nils Hoglander on Monday evening.

Hoglander was cutting to the middle of the ice at the precise moment that Canucks defender Jordie Benn rifled a hard shot toward the Leafs goal in the later stages of the first period that just happened to catch his teammate up high, connecting hard in Hoglander's visor.

Upon first glance, it looked as though Hoglander was lucky to avoid a serious injury, but a moment later, the rookie was spotted skating toward the bench holding his face, which was soaked in blood.

The Swedish winger went straight to the Canucks' dressing room and did not return for the remainder of the period.

The good news is that Hoglander has returned to the game after receiving a quick patch-job between periods.
