The Winnipeg Jets announced today that they've re-signed defenceman Dylan DeMelo to a four-year, $12 million contract, with an average annual value of $3 million per season.

DeMelo, 27, was drafted in the sixth round, 179th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2011 NHL draft. In 269 regular season games, he has 64 points (7 G, 54 A), 131 penalty minutes, and is a +4. In 14 career playoff games, DeMelo has put up 1 assist, 6 penalty minutes, and is a +5.

DeMelo has been traded twice so far in his NHL career. On September 13th 2018, he was traded from San Jose with Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, Chris Tierney, a second round pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft, a conditional first round pick (2020), a conditional second round pick (2021), and a conditional first round pick (2022) to Ottawa for Erik Karlsson and Francis Perron.

The second trade saw DeMelo go from Ottawa to Winnipeg on February 18th for a third round pick in the 2020 NHL entry draft.

DeMelo played a key role in the Jets top-4 defensive group, stepping into a big role left by the absences of Dustin Byfuglien, Jacob Trouba, and Tyler Myers. He averaged 21:14 minutes of ice time in his 10 regular season games with the Jets. He proved he can step up into any role thrown his way, and played quite well in his short time with Winnipeg during the 2019-20 season.
