The Montreal Canadiens are getting out of their contract with defenceman Karl Alzner. The team has put the 32-year-old on waivers Tuesday in order to buy out the remaining two years left on his contract.

After some really good years with the Washington Capitals as a stay-at-home defenceman, Alzner was signed by the Canadiens as a free agent in 2017. His contract was for five years at $23.125 million in total salary. It all went downhill from there.

In 2018, The Habs started making Alzner a healthy scratch, ending the fourth longest Iron Man streak in the NHL at the time. Alzner was later sent to the minors and was only called up when someone was injured. Even then, he spent most of his time in the press box. He did join the team in the playoff bubble in Toronto, but did not dress for any games.

Once Alzner clears waivers and is bought out, he will become an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign anywhere in the NHL or any other league. It will be interesting to see if there are any takers. Alzner played 95 games with the Canadiens since joining the organization, producing one goal and 13 points.

According to Capfriendly's buyout calculator, Montreal's cap hit from the buyout will be close to $4 million next season, almost $2 million in 2021-22 and then $833,000 for the next two seasons after that.
