Since the middle of this summer, December 1st was pegged as the start date of the 2020-21 season. However, it appears that has changed.

"Hearing new 'target date' of Jan 1 is being planned for by NHL/NHLPA," said Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. "This does not guarantee season starting New Year's Day, but replaces Dec 1 as the current target. (Potential training camp would be beforehand.) This could change in the future — but that is where we stand now."

The reality is the date is very likely to change again. Owners across the NHL want to ensure at least some fans are allowed back in the arenas before teams take to the ice. Rules regarding COVID-19 differ in Canada and the US and even state to state. Almost all plans are guessing games at this point.

The NHL has previously stated it is committed to having an 82 game season in 2020-21 and is not interested in doing it inside a bubble given the amount of time everyone would have to spend away from their families and the outside world. On Monday, defeneman Matt Niskanen announced his retirement from the league with his agent stating he didn't want to go through any more uncertainty in the NHL related to COVID-19. One has to wonder if other players feel the same way.
