The Detroit Red Wings have loaned forward prospect Joe Veleno to the Malmo Redhawks of the SHL, Sweden's top league. This loan is a bit different than many we've seen in the past several weeks. Teams have been loaning prospects all across Europe until the start of NHL training camps, but Veleno's loan will see him stay with Malmo for the entire 2020-21 season.

Veleno, 20, was drafted in the first round, 30th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2018 NHL entry draft.

He spent the 2019-20 season with the Red Wings' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 54 games with Grand Rapids, Veleno had 23 points (11 G, 12 A), 18 penalty minutes and was a -25.

Veleno also had a pretty successful junior career in the QMJHL with the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Drummondville Voltigeurs. In 230 regular season games, he had 266 points (90 G, 176 A), 106 penalty minutes and was a +82. In 61 career playoff games, Veleno put up 46 points (27 G, 19 A), 34 penalty minutes and was a +10.

Internationally, Veleno has represented Canada on several occasions, most recently at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, where he was named an alternate captain. In 6 games, he had 6 points (1 G, 5 A), 8 penalty minutes and was a +3 as Canada won the gold medal.
