The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a paramount offseason, and new General Manager Brad Treliving has a lot on his plate.

Having just finished his first Entry Draft as GM, Treliving will now turn his focus to free agency, and major contract negotiations.

Two Leafs superstars are eligible for new deals, these players are Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Both will command huge raises from their current prices.

Nylander Dilemma

A prominent NHL insider has reported that one of these players' negotiations are not going well.

"According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, while appearing on 630 CHED with Bob Stauffer, things have stalled, and it's something to watch; take a look." - BladeOfSteel.com

The player Friedman is referring to is William Nylander, who has one more year left on his contract at $6.9 million.

In the report Friedman says that negotiations "aren't going great", and that "If that doesn't change, that's a situation to watch".

Hard Negotiator

This should be concerning for Leafs fans, not only because Nylander is a great player who Toronto cannot afford to lose for nothing, but also because Nylander has caused drama in contract negotiations before.

Nylander and the Leafs were unable to come to terms on a deal before the 2018/19 season, and he ended up sitting out until a last-minute agreement was reached just before the signing deadline December 1st.

Nylander was rusty upon his return and only tallied seven goals and 27 points in 54 games that year, drawing the ire of Leaf fans.

This time, because Nylander is a UFA after next year, the Leafs won't have to worry about a holdout. But the prospect of losing Nylander for nothing is more daunting.
