He has the distinction of being the highest draft pick ever from his country in the NHL. Today, he told reporters it's time to hang up his skates. Mikkel Boedker, who played for Denmark at the World Championships today in a 7-1 loss to Finland, said he's retiring to spend more time with his family.

"It will be the last one. It's a funny feeling to have. I've known it for a long time. It actually feels pretty good. I have a lot of great memories to look back on. Now I'm looking forward to getting home to my wife, daughter and family and enjoying them.

It's very special. I have experienced a lot, and I am incredibly proud that I can stand with the lion on my chest in my last match and give back to the development I have received in my career. It is incredibly special, but at the same time it is the right time."

Boedker's NHL History

Boedker, 33, was drafted 8th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2008, jumping into the NHL immediately. He spent most of his career in Arizona, having his best season in 2014-15 with 51 points (19 G, 22 A). At the trade deadline in 2016, he was sent to Colorado, but left the team as a free agent at the end of the season, signing a four-year, $16 million deal with San Jose. Boedker never lived up to the expectations of that contract, and was dealt to Ottawa at the 2018 draft. After two seasons there, he returned to Europe where he continued to play pro up to the end of 2022-23.

According to CapFriendly, Boedker earned just over $28 million over the course of his 12 year career (118 G, 209 A, 327 P, 709 GP).
