The Edmonton Oilers dropped a 3-0 lead to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. In a crazy finish featuring end-to-end action and some crazy saves from Jack Campbell, the Oilers fell 5-4 in overtime.

In his post-game interview, Connor McDavid looked simply debilitated. He's a professional at handling media at this point, so he didn't explicitly say anything outrageous. But it was interesting to say the least.

The guy simply looks fed up with all of it. The media, the losing, Jesse Puljujarvi's head not properly fitting into this helmet. The whole situation.

His answers were short and expressionless. Which, to be fair, is not a far cry from his typical vibrations.

But they say that 90% of communication is non-verbal, and McDavid's body language suggests this man is sick and tired of not being one of the best teams in the NHL. Which, they 100% should be.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl once again sit #1 and #2 in the NHL's scoring leaderboard, with McDavid reaching 100 points in 56 games. Just absurd rates of production from this duo. One would think the team with these two players would be a certified wagon, right?

WRONG!

Edmonton currently occupies the Western Conference's first Wild Card spot, five points ahead of the Calgary Flames who sit just outside the playoff picture. The Oilers are going to make the playoffs, there isn't much question there. But are they good enough to make a deep, deep run?

Last season, they made it as far as the Conference Finals before being steamrolled and swept by the eventual champs in 4 games.

So far in 2022-23, the Oilers rank #1 in goals-for; great! They also sit #22 in goals-against; not great. Jack Campbell hasn't worked out quite like the Oilers hoped, although he is playing better lately, to his credit.

The bottom line is that the Oilers have yet to insulate their generational talent with a great team. They have been a solid team the past few seasons, but solid teams don't win championships; great ones do.

The failure of the Oilers' front office to build a contending roster falls on the shoulders of the GM, Ken Holland. His predecessor, Peter Chiarelli, didn't leave the club in a great spot, but Holland hasn't found the same success he had in Detroit in the 2000's.

McDavid is signed through the 2025-26 season, so he is likely not going anywhere soon. But one has to think that if the Oilers can't ice a championship-calibre team, that the captain will grow tired and want a change.
