Lou Lamoriello - GM of the New York Islanders - is known for his readiness to make big splashes midseason. In his 20+ year tenure with the Devils, he fired head coaches weeks before the playoffs, made surprise trades, and even stood behind the bench himself when things weren't going well.

As GM of the Islanders, he is up to his old tricks, recently trading for Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat. Reviews on the deal were mixed.

Some folks believed the trade was senseless in that Horvat's acquisition doesn't address an area of need - NYI is stacked at center - and doesn't improve the team enough to justify the price. Others hold the opinion that Lou took his shot and landed a great player.

I suppose both can be true at the same time.

Another area of contention over the trade arose when some folks accused Lamoriello of illegally tampering for the sake of facilitating the deal. That's a heavy accusation, so what is the basis?

Per Pierre LeBrun: "One of the sticking points from some teams who were interested in going further down the road on trade talks regarding Horvat was that the Canucks did not give permission to the player's camp to talk extension with other teams."

Contrast that with Frank Seravalli's report that Lamoriello wouldn't have made the trade unless he was confident an extension would get done, and things start to look dicey.

"My understanding is Lou wasn't pulling the trigger on this deal unless he knew Horvat was re-signing," Seravalli said on Canucks Central.

Ipso facto, many folks have suggested some foul play was involved before the trade. After all, how would Lamoriello know an extension was plausible if Horvat and his agent were not permitted to discuss it beforehand?
