Some tough news for the Toronto Maple Leafs before opening night of the 2022-23 NHL season even gets here. Both Carl Dalhstrom and Jordie Benn left Wednesday's game against the Montreal Canadiens early and never returned. Toronto released an update Friday.

According to head coach Sheldon Keefe, Benn has a groin injury and will miss at least three weeks. As for Dalhstrom, he needs surgery on his shoulder. He will miss six months, meaning his return would likely come in the playoffs rather than the regular season.

Benn signed with the Maple Leafs during the summer. Dalhstrom, a former second round pick, has been with Toronto since the summer of 2021. He spent most of last season in the AHL, playing just three games with the Leafs.

Rasmus Sandin, who had been a restricted free agent holdout from Toronto's training camp, signed a new deal the day after these injuries occurred. The defenceman noted that the team would be light on the blueline with Benn and Dalhstrom out, and he didn't want to hold up the process any longer. Sandin signed on for two years with an average annual value of $1.4 million. That was reportedly Toronto GM Kyle Dubas' offer from back in July.
