The Arizona Coyotes are playing 2022-23 in a college stadium, roughly one-third the size of the average NHL arena. So, they absolutely must get creative in turning this transition phase into something long-lasting. A series of gimmicks and PR-wins is a good start, but ultimately it starts and ends with icing a digestible product for their fans.

For now, however, they have to resort to the first two; gimmicks and PR-wins. And they had one of each with a small piece of news today.

Per The Athletic's Craig Morgan, the Yotes are planning on gifting fans at the team's home opener versus Winnipeg on October 30 will receive a complimentary mullet, in celebration of the team's temporary residence, Mullett Arena.

The Coyotes' home opener just got legitimately interesting upon picturing 5,000 mullets waving coyote pelts in the air. A special image.

Clearly, the organization understands it has a culture to build, and linking with Arizona State was a 200-IQ level market strategy. A perennial powerhouse in the United States' 'party school' leaderboard, ASU is a great place to plant the seeds of the Coyotes' future fanbase.

With ~65,000 students enrolled and two marquee hockey teams in town, Tempe, Arizona could become a hockey hotbed before long. Ownership has stumbled in their tracks at times, but the Meruelo ownership group is committed to the franchise, no question about it.
