The Ottawa Senators are signing forward Tyler Motte to a one-year, $1.35 million contract:

Motte, 27, is a veteran of 269 NHL games across four teams, totaling 62 regular season points and another 7 points in 32 career playoff games. After being traded to the New York Rangers last season, Motte had trouble landing a contract this summer, eventually settling for a one-year deal.

Motte is a pure defensive-forward with minimal play-making ability whose primary role is killing penalties and grinding down opposing defenses via forechecking. He scores at an oddly high rate at 5v5 but does not do so by any measure of consistency, so lucky for Ottawa they loaded up on goals this summer by way of Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux.

Ottawa needed to insulate their team defense, and Motte is a great insertion into the team's bottom-six to do so.

The summer of Pierre Dorion continues, as the Senators continue to improve their team in a meaningful manner. They have added or solidified their team in pretty much every way, and they still have around $6 million left in cap space. Tidy work from Mr. Dorion.
