Dominik Simon has signed a two-year contract with HC Sparta Praha of the Czech Extraliiga, the same division in which Jaromir Jagr's Kladno Knights play, for what it's worth. Sparta lost in the Finals last year, and you can bet they are jolted to sign the 256-game NHL veteran.

Sparta's release mentions that Simon had a tryout offer from the Penguins, ultimately opting to return home instead after a strong run in the NHL. Brian Burke has always had players interests in mind, and he stayed true to it offering Simon another chance to keep his NHL dream alive. Alas, Prague was calling for him to return.

From Sparta's release, translated from Czech: "Dominik Simon considered the possibility of continuing abroad over the summer, but in the end he decided for his parent team. "Pittsburgh offered me a camp, but while I was waiting I realized that I would actually like to be at home in Prague and in an environment that I know well. I'm glad that we agreed and I can play in Sparta. I feel very good here," he said experienced forward."

Simon was a fifth-round pick for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015, playing 228 games for them plus another 159 for the AHL Penguins. He spent 2021-22 with the Anaheim Ducks, scoring four assists in 17 matches. All said and done, he managed 77 NHL points, which is good enough for a 25-point pace over a full 82 game season. His offensive output was average, and his defensive input was not enough to keep him afloat. Frankly, the 28-year old's NHL dream looked like a long shot at this stage, anyway, and he is going out on his own terms, which is respectable.
