Following the dismissal of Dominique Ducharme as interim Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens in February, the team made a big splash and in a surprising move, hired Hockey Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis as their new bench boss.

But this wasn't the first time St. Louis was asked about joining the Montreal Canadiens in a coaching role.

During an appearance on The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro, Dominique Ducharme revealed that he reached out to Martin St. Louis following the 2021 Stanley Cup Final to see if he would want to join the Canadiens as an Assistant Coach.

"I like Marty (St. Louis) a lot. We played together two years, we're good friends. I asked him last summer, after the Final, to join our team as an Assistant Coach and be part of the staff, because I think he's a good hockey guy and we get along really well." Ducharme said.

When asked why St. Louis didn't join at the time, he added, "It came close, the first time when I called him. He committed to taking care of his last son and coaching him. Then he phoned me back the next day and said 'It's hard on me, let me think about it and let's talk again'. Then finally, it was more of a family decision at the time and I respect that."

St. Louis led the Canadiens to a 14-19-4 record through 37 games after being hired on February 9th. The 47-year-old had the interim tag removed from his title on June 1st, signing a three-year extension to remain the Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
