Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen received his honorary doctorate degree from Tampere University today, making him the first NHL GM I know of to acquire a doctorate degree and sign Johnny Gaudreau in the same summer. Might need to fact check that:

Finland's only representative in the NHL GM's guild, Kekäläinen is one of my favorites in the league. Guys like Kekäläinen, Brad Treliving (CGY), Kevin Cheveldayoff (WIN), whose teams sit at a natural disadvantage when recruiting free agents and at times retaining their own players are the perennial underdogs of the NHL.

And I enjoy seeing teams like that celebrate wins, regardless of how they come. So, seeing Kekäläinen's excellence and his stoic approach to life and business is cool for me, and probably for Blue Jackets fans alike.

Now that Kekäläinen acquired his doctorate degree, I wonder if other GMs will be forced to greet him as 'Dr. Kekäläinen' when calling about trades and other business.
