Some tough news for San Jose Sharks defenceman Nikolai Knyzhov. The team has announced the 24-year-old will miss a significant portion of the 2022-23 season after tearing his Achilles tendon while participating in off-ice training.

"Knyzhov underwent successful surgery on August 10 at Kaiser Permanente San Jose to repair the injury," said GM Mike Grier in a release. "The estimated time of recovery for injuries of this nature is approximately six months."

If all goes well, that would put Knyzhov's return at sometime around mid-January.

Knyzhov had just become a regular in the NHL in 2020-21, playing in 56 games with the Sharks, in which he scored 2 goals and added 8 assists. He then missed all of last season with an injury. Knyzhov was never drafted, but signed by the Sharks to an entry-level deal in July of 2019.
