The Carolina Hurricanes & Ethan Bear have agreed to a one-year, $2.2 million contract extension, avoiding salary arbitration.

Bear, 25, was in & out of the Canes' lineup last season after struggling with a long bout with COVID. He managed 14 points in 58 games in 2022-23 in a sheltered role. Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour seemed to like Bear at first, but as the year went on RBA didn't appear comfortable relying on him at key points.

As he did in Edmonton, Ethan Bear produced strong underlying numbers despite low end-product. He is visibly capable of moving the puck & had a generally strong performance in his limited role. Carolina retains his services at a decently low cap-hit, which is very on-brand for GM Don Waddell's Hurricanes.
