Siegenthaler, 25, was acquired by the New Jersey Devils on April 11, 2021 in exchange for Arizona's conditional third-round pick (acquired in the Taylor Hall trade) from the Washington Capitals.
Since his acquisition, Siegenthaler has become a standout defensive defenseman, posting some of the best defensive metrics in the 2021-22 season. His chance-suppression is among the NHL's best & he is excellent on the PK. For a young defenseman playing against top competition, he sports a desirable penalty differential as well. While his offensive totals do not jump off the page, his ability to stop opposing attacks & transition his team to offense is remarkable. There is a real chance he outscores what his contract is worth in 2022-23.
The Swiss-born defenseman set a bunch of career highs last season, including games played, points, and virtually all time-on-ice metrics. I said it after watching his first game as a Devil: Jonas Siegenthaler was a steal for a third round pick.
See? I said it.
GM Tom Fitzgerald aced every shred of the Jonas Siegenthaler trade. First, trading a mid-round pick for him & now signing him to a long-term deal at an extremely favorable cap hit.
It is also worth mentioning that the Swiss-born stalwart grew up friends with Devils' Captain Nico Hischier & the two have played on the Swiss National Team since boyhood. The duo's friendship undoubtedly played into consideration for Fitzgerald when making the trade. And it has paid off quite well for the Devils, who now have a prototypical shut-down defenseman for their left side.
And if you consider RHD John Marino a shut-down defenseman (I don't think you could just yet, but he has the makings of one), the Devils have a shut-down, transition-savvy defenseman on both sides; both of whom are 25, under team control, and earn a combined $8.8 million. Oh, and the Devils still have Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Graves, and Damon Severson. Oh, and Luke Hughes & Simon Nemec both on their way up.
That is some tidy work from Tom Fitzgerald who inherited next-to-nothing in the way of defensive prowess. The New Jersey Devils are quietly building something special, and I implore all hockey fans to take notice. The Devils are coming.
