It's been two-and-a-half years since the infamous incident between defenceman Tony DeAngelo and goaltender Alex Georgiev while both were playing with the New York Rangers, and ,up until now, DeAngelo has had little to say about it. DeAngelo, now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers (2 years at a $5 million AAV), appeared on the Cam and Strick podcast Tuesday and talked about the incident openly for the first time.

In the interview, DeAngelo admitted to saying something to Georgiev after a loss to Pittsburgh in overtime on January 30th, 2020.

"We were leaving the ice, and I said something to him, and... you should never say something to a goalie when you leave the ice... And I did, and he ran at me in a rage," said DeAngelo.

Following that incident, the Rangers told DeAngelo to sit while they decided what would be done with him. While many felt he would be traded, DeAngelo ended up staying home for the remainder of the season. He insisted on the podcast that he offered to terminate his contract at the trade deadline in order to sign elsewhere, but NYR wouldn't budge. He didn't sound too happy about that. He also seemed displeased with the fact that the team didn't stand up for his when a story came out in the media that he had stolen the puck from the first goal of then teammate K'Andre Miller. DeAngelo said the story was entirely fabricated (Miller's agent denied the incident as well) but no one from the team offered to defend him.

"It is what it is, I got bought out. I took the brunt of what happened," said DeAngelo on the podcast. "I'm not going to sit here and finger-point at people or whatever. But, all I would say is, I don't think that's the way it should have went down. I should have just been traded."

"I didn't like that there was no backup for me from the team," said DeAngelo, referring to the Miller story. "Even if they wanted to get rid of me so bad, it is what it is. But there was no protection of me, as well, to put that out there that it wasn't true. And, there was no trying to trade me, it was just 'oh we're gonna bury you'."

"The last year (with the Rangers), I offered to terminate my own contract to play again," DeAngelo continued. "And then after the deadline, after [a trade] didn't pan out, a story came out that 'oh the Rangers offered for me to terminate and I declined', which was very inaccurate. I offered, because I wanted to play."
