After a tumultuous season of goaltending for the Devils, GM Tom Fitzgerald has acguired a possible starting goaltender to partner with Mackenzie Blackwood. Per a team release, the Devils traded draft picks #37 & #70 in exchange for G Vitek Vanecek & pick #46 from the Washington Capitals.

The goaltending carousel is whirring at full speed, it is hard to keep up. The Devils were reportedly in on Ville Husso & Jack Campbell, and there is no indication that they are done. However, Vanecek's acquisition could be sufficient for the 2022-23 season. As for the Capitals, they still have Ilya Samsonov, but they will likely pursue alternate options this summer. Rumblings have it that Avalanche GM Joe Sakic is fielding offers for the rights to Darcy Kuemper, so it is plausible Washington could be in play there.

Ultimately, the deal is fairly even & neither team wins or loses at first glance. Only time will tell how this plays out, but NJ is desperate to win games this year while the Caps look to ascend the ever-difficult metropolitan division. After another first round exit, Alex Ovechkin & co. likely want another shot at Lord Stanley's cup, so GM Brian MacLellan will look to add over the summer.
