There's no question the Ottawa Senators would like to move on from Matt Murray and get his contract off the books. Murray's time in Ottawa hasn't gone as expected, with injuries and inconsistent play to blame.

On Thursday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres had converstions about a trade involving Matt Murray, but the Thunder Bay native used his no-trade clause to nix the move.

"Hearing OTT & BUF were deep into conversations about a Matt Murray trade. Sabres are on his No-trade list, and Murray — as his his contractual right — stuck to his list," Friedman said.

The 28-year-old has two-years remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $6.25 million per season. His contract also includes a modified no-trade clause, with a ten team no-trade list.

Bruce Garrioch of TSN adds that Ottawa's provincial rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs, are interest in Matt Murray and that he would agree to waive his no-trade clause to go there. Garrioch also mentioned that the Arizona Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks are looking for a goaltender, with Murray possibly being an option for those organizations.

Per Darren Dreger, the prospective trade would have seen Ottawa retaining an undisclosed portion of Murray's salary & the Buffalo swapping their 16th overall draft pick for Ottawa's 7th overall pick in this year's entry draft.
